Welcome to the homepage of Carleton College's local chapter of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society.
Sigma Xi is an organization with the goal of promoting scientific research. Please see their web page for detailed information and the organization's mission statement. The Carleton College chapter (067) seeks to promote and recognize student contributions to scientific research through sponsoring opportunities for student research presentations on campus as well as bringing in outside speakers to discuss the results and implications of their research and/or career options available to science students.

Summary of 2003 - 2004 Academic Year Events:
2003- 2004 was a busy year for the Carleton College chapter! We sponsored the All-Science Poster Session in the Fall, at which science students from all departments were invited to present their research at a public poster session. There were many wonderful posters describing work done by students both on and off campus. The variety was tremendous, and students from Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics/Astronomy, Psychology and Computer Science presented their work.
Also during Fall term, we sponsored a panel discussion entitled "Wondering What to do with Your Life?" at which six panelists with diverse science backgrounds and diverse career paths (from secondary education to veterinary medicine, including chemical, biological, and geological research) described their educational background and career path, and commented on why they love what they do. Students had opportunities to interact with the panelists and asked great questions.
During Winter term, we hosted the annual induction ceremony and banquet. At this banquet, we inducted 65 new members from the class of 2004! This is a very research-active class! We also announced the awarding of the Distinguished High School Teacher Award, to Betsy Halpern, a Biology teacher in Eugene, OR. Betsy was not in attendance, but she received a lovely plaque, a check, and a subscription to American Scientist from us shortly after the ceremony. The highlight of the evening was the Student Research Symposium after dinner. The students who presented were:
We thank these students for their willingness to share their research and the entire chapter for supporting their efforts.
Spring term has been devoted to planning events for next year. We hope to have an equally engaging and student-research focused program during 2004 - 2005.
